Gong Minji, better know by her stage name Minzy, (born January 18, 1994) is a South Korean artist under “The Music Works” Entertainment. She was born in Seoul, South Korea but moved to Gwangju where she spent part of her childhood before returning back to the city at the age of 11 for her training with YG Entertainment – her former entertainment label.

Early Life and Career

Minzy was born in Seoul, South Korea, but moved to Gwangju shortly thereafter where she participated in many dance contests and competitions during her younger years. Minzy is the granddaughter of Gong Okjin, a well-known folk dancer in South Korea.

YG Entertainment discovered Minzy through a video uploaded on the Internet, which showed her dancing. The video received many hits and garnered praise for Minzy’s ability to dance. Because of her rising popularity through the Internet, YG contacted and recruited her, after which she became a trainee in the entertainment company. This was when she was in 6th grade in March 2005.

During the course of her trainee days in YG Entertainment, Minzy landed in a difficult position. She was tone deaf when she first came to YGE to the point that she wasn’t cut to be in an idol group at all. She got vocal nodules for 3 months and couldn’t even speak one word during that time. When she had been in YG Entertainment for 6 months, because her voice was naturally very powerful sounding that there was only one or two songs that she couldn’t reach, Minzy sung those songs till she hurt her throat. At that time she wanted to give up, but she received medical attention, practiced speaking again and was able to recover.

After spending 5 years of training in YG Entertainment, Minzy debuted as part of 2NE1 on May 17, 2009 with their hit debut single “Fire”. Only at the age of 15 then, Minzy was the youngest among the quartet, having the biggest age gap of 10 years with member Park Bom. On July 16, 2009, it was revealed that she had dropped out from high school and would be focusing on her music work with 2NE1. The group continued their successful debut by releasing their 1st EP that same year leading with title-track “I Don’t Care”. Minzy also has a duet with member CL “Please Don’t Go” that was released in 2009. The duet was released and performed for the first time during the 2009 MAMA Awards.

On January 2015, Minzy went to Los Angeles, California and signed up for a dance class at the Millennium Dance  Complex, a worldwide premiere studio of commercial dance. The studio is also famous for its A-list clients which include Justin Timberlake, Usher, P. Diddy, Lindsay Lohan and etc. She was also featured on Antoine Troupe’s LA dance class video alongside other performers. The group danced to Janet Jackson’s “Feedback”.

On May 2016, she officially signed an exclusive contract with “The Music Works”, a subsidiary of CJ E&M’s music division, to pursue a new journey as an artist named Minzy Kong.

On April 17, 2017, Minzy released her first solo album Minzy Work 01 ‘UNO’ with six tracks and features Flowsik and Jay Park.

Personal Life

Minzy grew up in a Christian Family. Her sister, Gong Minyoung, is a Gospel singer. Minzy enrolls into Baekseok University and attends Freshman orientation in 2014 while promoting 2NE1 2nd studio album CRUSH. Minzy decided to attend Baekseok University, a private Christian university, to major in Christian Theology. Minzy was praised for her hard work in both her education and career as she received straight A’s and had been a merit scholarship student for the first semester spread.

Musical Style and Influences

Aside from being the main dancer of her former group, Minzy is also a vocalist and rapper. After the news of Michael Jackson’s death, she started searching all of his videos in Youtube to know more about him. She later on collected all the DVDs, CDs and all the videos that are related to Michael Jackson and set him as her role model.

Minzy loves rock music – Radiohead, The Rolling Stones, Nirvana, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Queen, Oasis, Snow Patrol etc.

Minzy is also a huge fan of Se7en, Snoop Dogg, Usher, and Black Eyed Peas. She covered Fergie in one of her pre-debut videos before.
